The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is a characteristic church building in Serkenrode , a district of Finnentrop in the Olpe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the pastoral association Frettertal in the Archdiocese of Paderborn.

History and architecture

The foundation of a school vicarie was approved on February 22nd, 1813 and confirmed by the Vicariate General in Cologne on December 22nd, 1813. The church probably goes back to a court chapel from the 16th century, it was enlarged in 1901 to its present size. The tower of the church, which was built in a neo-Gothic style in 1901 , was originally in the roof structure, which showed significant damage. The building was extended in 1958 by an additional yoke and the church tower over a square floor plan according to plans by the architect Karl Brochhausen . The walls of the tower are structured by round-arched formwork windows and thus adapted to the design of the old building. The tall spire protrudes a little from the gable wall. The attached yoke is vaulted with cross ribs and harmoniously continues the interior of the nave. The wide organ loft standing in this yoke is crossed by two pillars that support the tower. The concrete glass windows of the baptismal font on the side were made in 1962 based on designs by Herbert Lorenz.

Parish Vicarage House

The parish vicarage house, which was built in 1814, is part of the church; The ground floor of the two-story building is solidly bricked, the upper floor is half-timbered . The house under a steep gable roof was built as a farm and residential building. The residential part originally ended in the originally drivable cross hall, which today houses the parish library.
