The Roman Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist is a Romanesque country church with a secular upper floor in the district of Rinkam von Atting in the Lower Bavarian district of Straubing-Bogen . It belongs to the parish Atting in the dean's office Straubing of the diocese of Passau .

history

The Romanesque church was built around 1150 and is one of the oldest churches in the Straubing-Bogen district. This church was once the chapel of a noble residence . In the Gothic period, an upper floor was added to the nave, and the tower on the west side was only expanded in the post-Romanesque period. The building was restored in 1965/1966.

architecture

The small church building stands on a hill. The choir and the nave are made of masonry using small sandstone blocks, the upper floor is made of brick. The west tower has moved south from the axis of the ship. The retracted choir is almost square and is closed by a groin vault. The narrow opening of the choir arch is provided with profiled fighters . In the front wall of the nave, the chancel arch is flanked by two deep round arch niches that are attached to the floor and which were probably once used to store paraments and liturgical implements .

The two yokes of the ship are designed very differently. The eastern main yoke is closed with a cross vault. The west yoke is only about half as deep and covered with a transverse barrel vault. This yoke was once filled with a gallery, which was originally directly accessible from the outside, but after adding the tower it is accessible through it. The wide belt arch that separates the two yokes was only added after the gallery was removed in the Baroque period. The low, secular upper floor is accessible through the tower, which is closed off with a beamed ceiling and is illuminated by loopholes-like windows. Due to this unusual design, the building is viewed as a fortified church , the upper part was probably used to store supplies and as a place of refuge. This profane partial use of a sacred building shows a gradual change of heart with regard to the “sanctity” of the church building: Up until the late Middle Ages, the profane overbuilding of a sacred space was avoided wherever possible and a chapel bay was built in instead .
