The parish church of St. John the Baptist is a Catholic church in Grainau , Obergrainau district, Garmisch-Partenkirchen district , Bavaria. The parish belongs to the parish association Zugspitze.

The building was a chapel in the style of Baroque built 1697th The building has a small upstream cemetery , which was only approved for the site in 1845. The place belonged to the parish Garmisch, only in 1812 Ober- and Untergrainau got their own local chaplain with the establishment of the school deficit in 1812.

The chapel was badly damaged by a fire on March 12, 1779: the altar, all the furnishings, the wooden tower and the roof structure were destroyed in flames. In 1782 the restoration was completed with the painting of the church interior by Franz Seraph Zwinck from Oberammergau. In the same year the church was consecrated again.

In 1848/49 the chapel was extended to the north due to the increased population; at the same time the larger tower with a pointed roof was created. The church was enlarged from 1925 to 1927 according to plans by Carl Sattler and received its present form with the "onion" roof of the tower, the octagonal main room and the altar attached to the south. Michael Cardinal Faulhaber completed the consecration on June 24, 1927. In 1929 Johann Michael Schmitt took over the painting with a Johannes cycle; two of the works of art were placed in the mountain landscape - the fresco “Mary's walk through the mountains” with the wax stones in the background and the baptism of Jesus, which is moved to the Eibsee .

A fundamental interior renovation took place from 1990 to 1997. In 2008 the church tower was statically renewed and adorned with the Marian fresco from the 19th century. The "onion" received a new copper roof.

The church is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

Patron is John the Baptist , the consecration in his honor took place on June 18, 1749.
