St. John the Baptist is the Catholic parish church in the Illdorf district of Burgheim in the Upper Bavarian district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen .

Church history

Church of St. John the Baptist ib Illdorf

When the first church was built is unknown. But soon after the year 1000, the Counts of Lechsgmünd-Graisbach also acquired the patronage rights of the parish church of St. John the Baptist. The church tower is Romanesque and is believed to have been built between 1000 and 1250 AD.

On February 14, 1315, Count Bertold as a feudal lord and the knight Bertold von Straß as a feudal man gave the monastery in Niederschönenfeld the right of patronage to the Illdorf parish church. It stayed there until secularization in 1803. At the same time, Bishop Friedrich von Augsburg incorporated the parish of Illdorf into the Niederschönenfeld monastery and obliged the order to always present a secular priest. The clergy can be traced back to the year 1642 without any gaps.

In 1723, today's parish church of John the Baptist was built. Pastor Johann Michael Endreßer, a native of Schrobenhausen, is named in an inscription as the builder of the church. In 1776 the church tower collapsed and had to be rebuilt. How great the damage was can no longer be determined. The lower walls should have survived the collapse.

Renovation of modern times

Ceiling painting baptism of Jesus on the Jordan

In the years 1878, 1914 and 1939 the believers had to dig into their pockets for an interior renovation. For the small parish village it was always a financial feat. In 1941 an exterior renovation was due, at the same time the old sacristy was torn down and a new one with a pulpit was built. In 1953 the exterior was renovated again and heating was installed. In 1956 the church was equipped with a new organ.

The believers reached out again vigorously in 1998/99. It was a major interior renovation of the parish church of John the Baptist. The entire shell was repainted and the high altar and side altars were renovated. A new floor was laid, before the old one had to be knocked out. The sacristy was also given new plastering and painting, the pews had to be washed and let in. The craftsmen also laid a new floor on the gallery. New benches were made for the gallery, an alarm system was installed and four new chandeliers were procured for the nave. Painter Kugelmann put ceiling paintings with John the Baptist in the Baroque style so that the entire church forms a unit. The total costs amounted to DM 430,000. In August 2005, the people of Illdorf celebrated the renovation of the rectory as part of a parish festival.

The parish church of Illdorf was built in 1723 and is under the patronage of John the Baptist and belongs to the Burgheim parish community. The interior furnishings with the three altars date from around 1730. The picture in the high altar depicts the beheading of John the Baptist. It is painted oil on canvas.

The right side altar with St. Sebastian , also a carved wooden figure. In 1905 a brotherhood of Sebastian was still held. Saint Florian is still above the patron. In 1999, during a major renovation, the chancel was equipped with floodlights.

The gallery parapet contains the twelve apostles with Jesus and Mary. Since July 2000, there is a new ceiling painting of Saint Cecilia of Rome with angels playing music above the gallery . graveyard

Cemetery with morgue in Illdorf

Originally the cemetery was, as is common practice, at the parish church. However, due to the moisture in the soil, it has since been moved to the entrance to the village. An exact date is not known. However, the Neuburger advertising paper as the local newspaper writes that the cemetery was expanded and a chapel was built. The consecration takes place on November 9, 1895 and is carried out by the local priest Sebastian Fend in the presence of several clergymen. A mass is also celebrated.

In 1958 a morgue was built in place of the chapel at a cost of DM 11,000, but a new fence was also created.

The War of Succession and the "Holy Wood"

It was around 1704 that the War of the Spanish Succession was raging. The Austrians burdened the Bavarian elector with heavy war tributes. The princes passed these burdens on to the feudal lords. The Austrians camped in the neighboring town of Ambach . They had to be maintained and that cost considerable resources. The crew only wanted to withdraw for a ransom of 30,000 guilders. That would be around 1 million euros today.

The people of Ambach knew that the Illdorf Church Foundation was very rich. They came as supplicants, borrowed 25,000 guilders there and pledged their legal forest “holy wood”. The farmers who still have timber rights to the foundation forest awarded 5000 guilders.

But the people of Ambach were not able to repay the money at a certain point in time, so the forest ownership "Holy Wood" passed to the Illdorfers. The people of Ambach still see it as an innocent property that has been lost. That is why they let themselves be carried away to forest atrocities in this part of the forest.

Lady Chapel

The chapel of the "Black Madonna" in Illdorf

During pilgrimages to Czestochowa in 1980 and 1982 , the pilgrims suggested building a chapel and finally implemented it. In the presence of the clergy and many believers, the pastor Stanislaus Kryszkowski von Illdorf consecrated a Lady Chapel with the icon of Czestochowa on July 10, 1983 on the Leitenberg. It was exactly that year in which the 600th anniversary was celebrated in Poland. That is why this wooden chapel bears the number 600. “A small but fine chapel made of wood and with lots of decorations”, the local newspaper documented at the time.

Pastor Kryszkowski was not only the engine as a chapel builder, he also lent a hand and painted the "Black Madonna", which was framed in lime wood, after months of work based on the original from Czestochowa.

The ladies of the Illdorf Volunteer Fire Brigade carried the picture of the “Black Madonna” to the Marienhügel, accompanied in a festive procession by the clergy, the flag delegations and the faithful. In a festive hour of devotion, the chapel received the church's blessing and was thus officially dedicated. Kryszkowski had translated the song of the "Black Madonna" from Polish. The singing gave the celebration a special note.

Even Auxiliary Bishop Rudolf Schmid from Augsburg made a pilgrimage with the confirmants in 1989 to the Marienhügel and was impressed by the shrine.

anniversary

In 2008 the people of Illdorf celebrated the 25th birthday of the Marienkapelle. The pastor and chapel builder Stanislaus Kryszkowski, who resided in Illdorf from 1979 to 1988, also came to the occasion and gave the sermon. He has been working as a pastor in Vinnizia, Ukraine, since 2003.

A thank-you mass was also included in the anniversary, because on May 30, 2005, a military plane crashed very close by . The pilot was able to save himself by parachuting and save Illdorf and the surrounding area from a major accident. The pilot had with him a picture of Mary with a prayer that was found at the crash site and prayed on the anniversary.

Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko

Brief life story

Picture of the murdered priest Jerzy Popieluszko in the Marienkapelle in Illdorf

Pastor Jerzy Popiełuszko is a Polish clergyman and martyr . His paths led him to Illdorf at the beginning of July 1980. There he visited his uncle and Salesian Father Dr. Georg Ryzewski. Pastor Georg (Jerzy) stayed here for a week, celebrated services in Illdorf, so the believers got to know and appreciate the pastor. In his sermons, he condemned the violence and stood up for those detained and persecuted. His ideals cost him his life.

Worship in Illdorf

The Illdorf believers were shocked by the ordeal of their well-known clergyman. There was a memorial service for the 37-year-old dead with a large number of participants. Pastor Stanislaus Kryszkowski carved a frame for the picture of the martyr. On July 13, 1986 there was a solemn transfer to the Marienhügel with handover to the Chapel of the Black Madonna . 25 years after his death, Pastor Jerzy Popieluszko was beatified in Warsaw .
