The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist in the Spessart parish of Partenstein in Franconia belongs to the diocese of Würzburg . It is registered under the number D-6-77-170-3 in the Bavarian Monument List.

history

The first Catholic church in Partenstein dates back to 1471. However, Bardenstein Castle, first mentioned in 1233, probably owned the first Catholic church in Partenstein with its castle chapel . In 1344 Partenstein appears as a parish for the first time in a directory of the Taubergau regional chapter . At that time the parish belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz .

1603 the Archdiocese of Mainz resulted in the former rule Rieneck the Counter-Reformation by, prompting Frammersbach and Lohr were Catholic, while Partenstein majority Hanau shelter and remained Protestant. Those who lived on property in Mainz, however, became Catholic ( Cuius regio, eius religio ). In 1691, Swedish armies destroyed the castle, the church and the rectory and drove the population away. In 1697 a Catholic chapel and a Catholic school were built again. The Archbishop of Mainz and Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn had a Catholic church built in Partenstein again in 1706. The community belonged to Frammersbach.

In 1836 the Catholic church, which had become too small, was replaced by the current church.

Dispute over church square names

2016 launched the Protestant church Partenstein occasion of the Reformation anniversary initiative, the square in front of the Lutheran Church of Christ the name "Martin Luther Square" to give.
