St. John Durival Kemp, 2nd Viscount Rochdale (born January 15, 1938 - † February 27, 2015 ) was a British peer and non-party politician .

Life

St. John Durival Kemp, 2nd Viscount Rochdale was born to John Kemp, 1st Viscount Rochdale (1906-1993) and his wife Elinor Dorothea Pease. With the death of his father on May 24, 1993 he inherited the title of 2nd Viscount Rochdale of Rochdale in the County Palatine of Lancaster in the Peerage of the United Kingdom (created 1960) and the subordinate title of 3rd Baron Rochdale of Rochdale in the County Palatine of Lancaster in the Peerage of the United Kingdom (created 1913).

Membership in the House of Lords

With the inheritance of the title of Viscount Rochdale, Kemp became an official member of the House of Lords on May 24, 1993 . In the House of Lords he was listed as a non-party and non-attached. He was a formal member of the House of Lords from May 24, 1993 to November 11, 1999. He was not present during the 1997/98 session. His membership in the House of Lords ended on November 11, 1999 by the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for election for one of the remaining seats.

He was not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election. He was not a member of the Hereditary Peers Association .

Private

Kemp was married twice. On January 5, 1960, he married Serena Jane Clark-Hall, the daughter of James Edward Michael Clark-Hall and Diana Mary Gatacre. His wife came from knowing , Bethersden in the county of Kent . The marriage was divorced in 1974. In 1976 he married his second wife Elizabeth Anderton, the former wife of James Michael Anderton and daughter of Robert Norman Rossiter Boldon, from Cullercoats in the county of Northumberland . He has two sons and two daughters from his first marriage. His younger son, the Hon Christopher Kemp (* 1969) died on February 25, 2015, two days before his father's death. Heir to the title “Viscount Rochdale” is his eldest son, the Hon. Jonathan Hugo Durival Kemp (* 1961).

Kemp lived on the Lingholm Estate outside Portinscale , near Keswick in Cumbria . In 2012, Kemp put the property up for sale. In 2013 the country estate was sold to the Seymour family.

The memorial service for Kemp was held on March 18, 2015 at Crosthwaite Church in Keswick.
