St. Joseph is the Roman Catholic church in the Moitzfeld district of the city of Bergisch Gladbach .

Building history

The Moitzfeld Catholics have always belonged to the parish of St. Nikolaus in Bensberg. When the population increased at the beginning of the 20th century because of the nearby Weiss pit , the desire arose for a church of its own.

In 1920 the "Moitzfeld Church Building Association" was founded. A wooden barrack was purchased, which was built in 1918 in Cologne-Bocklemünd as an officers' mess for the English occupation troops, it was dismantled in Cologne and transported to Moitzfeld by horse-drawn carts and free labor from residents. The church premises had been donated by Luise Unterbusch. The foundation stone was laid on the 1st Sunday of Advent in 1920 and the wooden emergency church was consecrated on April 17, 1921. In 1933 the Archdiocese of Cologne made Moitzfeld an independent parish rectorate. In 1938/39 a rectory was built, which was financed by donations and collections.

Jakob Holl was pastor in Moitzfeld from February 9, 1940 to March 31, 1955 . Even at the beginning of his term of office, the old wooden church showed damage caused by the weather. Holl therefore contacted the Bensberg architect Bernhard Rotterdam and planned the construction of a new church with him. As early as 1943 it was clear what this new church should look like. After the end of the war, earthworks began on May 27, 1946 and were carried out by hand. The nave grew slowly after the excavation work. The foundation stone for the tower was laid on July 15, 1950 and the consecration took place on December 17, 1950. From now on, services were held in the new church, with construction work continuing to complete the building. The tower was completed in 1951. It was initially equipped with two bells. In 1952 two more bells were added from a bell cemetery in the port of Hamburg . In the same year the wooden emergency church was removed. The consecration took place on May 1, 1958 by Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Cleven .

The new church received stained glass windows in 1950 with the biblical motifs Annunciation, Birth of Jesus, Last Supper , Crucifixion , Resurrection , designed by the Düsseldorf architect Günther Pelzer.

During the renovation in 1981, the chancel was redesigned and the walls of the church interior plastered and painted.
