After the parish St. Anna Verl for the construction of the new church in Sürenheide Mrs Bernhardine Jakob Feuerborn land on 23 October 1951 given was, the church could be started on 27 May 1953 the construction. The foundation stone was laid on July 12, 1953.

During the construction phase there was a fatal accident of a carpenter's apprentice, which meant that the consecration had to be postponed. On November 28, 1954, there was therefore only one benediction . A benediction includes a provisional approval from the episcopal authority and not the official start of use by the episcopal mandate. On September 7, 1957, the consecration could be made up.

As early as 1955 the parish was raised to an independent parish vicarie with its own asset management.

In 1985 extensive renovation and reconstruction work was carried out on the parish church: the plaster of the outer walls, which was originally painted yellow, was replaced by red clinker bricks. In addition, the small bell tower that was on the main building of the church has been removed. Instead, the high church tower was built, which still characterizes the external appearance of the parish church of St. Judas Thaddäus.

The three Catholic parishes in Verl, Sankt Maria Immaculata in Kaunitz , Sankt Anna in Verl and Sankt Judas Thaddäus in Sürenheide, joined forces on January 1, 2001 to form a joint pastoral association.
