The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Maria Immaculata was built around 1746 by Prince Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz , the state chancellor of Austria. The hall church received its present form after an extension in 1897. It is located in the Kaunitz district of the East Westphalian city of Verl in the Gütersloh district in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia . Church and congregation belong to the Verl pastoral association in the Rietberg-Wiedenbrück deanery of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

The church is named after St. Mary with her nickname Immaculata . It was built after Count Maximilian Ulrich von Kaunitz- Rietberg (1679–1746) had determined in 1743 that a new parish with the name Neu-Kaunitz should be established on the border between the Liemke and Österwiehe farmers . This was also the laying of the foundation stone for the town of Kaunitz . Today the Fürst-Wenzel-Platz next to the church commemorates the founder of the village and the builder of the church.

history

The first efforts to establish a parish in the north of the county of Rietberg were made in the 17th century by Anna Catharina von Ostfriesland and Rietberg , as the routes to and from Neuenkirchen and Verl were too long.

On March 1, 1743, Count Maximilian Ulrich von Kaunitz- Rietberg founded a Latin school in Rietberg and a new parish church. According to the deed of foundation, the rectory, chaplaincy and sextonry are to be built. At the same time the church village of Neu-Kaunitz was founded, which was later renamed Kaunitz.

Count Wenzel Anton Kaunitz was an advisor to the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and stayed mainly in Vienna. During a business trip he was in Westphalia and laid the foundation stone for the church on September 6, 1746. On May 23, 1748, the auxiliary bishop Johann Friedrich Adolf von Hörde from Osnabrück undertook the consecration of the church under construction, which was completed a few months later. Between 1747 and 1750 the buildings for the pastor, chaplain and sexton were also built. The church tower was completed in 1755.

In 1882 there was a fire in the church when the two big bells melted. Then the church tower was rebuilt, raised by one meter, and given its pyramid roof. At the same time, a new bell was installed, which was made by Radler in Hildesheim in 1883. The chimes had the D major triad D f sharp A.

With the expansion of the Holter ironworks and the establishment of the Bielefeld-Paderborn railway line , the community grew and the baroque church was expanded. The eastern choir wall was laid down in 1897 and a transept and a choir room were built in its place.

On June 13, 1917, the two large bells and the conversion bell were overtaken by the church tower and melted down for war purposes. In 1920 a new steel bell was purchased.

In 1975 the church was painted.

On January 29, 2004 the church was entered as number 69 in the list of monuments of the city of Verl. In the reason it says the cath. Parish church of St. Maria Immaculata is important for human history, especially in the southern Gütersloh district, because it forms the center of the planned construction of Neukaunitz, which was founded and founded in 1743 by Count Maximilian Ulrich von Kaunitz-Rietberg.

From 2005 to 2008 the church underwent a renovation, during which the church also received a new bell. At the same time, the newly designed church square was inaugurated.

The main altar was monument of the month in Westphalia-Lippe in January 2007 .

location

In preparation for the construction of the church, the swampy area was filled up. The planning for the arrangement of the individual buildings goes back to the Rietberg engineer Gottfried Carlé. He placed the chaplain, rectory and sexton symmetrically around the church. So he positioned the rectory lengthways behind the choir, the chaplain and sexton stand in the middle of the church in the north and south. The road from Rietberg to Kaunitz was laid out in such a way that it ran towards the church tower. In front of the tower, the street was extended to the market square.

Building description

Floor plan before the expansion in 1897

Thomas Bülten drew the plans for the Maria Immaculata Church in Kaunitz. Master carpenter Johann Bernhard Dissen took over the construction management. The building material came from the quarries near Oerlinghausen or Berlebeck.

The originally three-aisled hall church had concave corners and no end of the choir. The west tower connected to the nave with a round arch. The church interior was spanned by a wooden ceiling. In the three bays there were arched windows to the north and south. The church was initially covered with Solling panels, which were replaced by clay pans in the 19th century.

The extension built in 1897 with transept and choir room

In 1897 the eastern wall of the choir was laid down and a transept was added. The plastered extension is structured with ashlar blocks and an arched frieze stretches along the facade below the eaves. On both gable sides, two arched windows take on the look of the original church. Further to the east, a polygonial choir closes off, which is illuminated by three narrow, colored arched windows. There is now a roof turret above the crossing . The gable roof is now covered with slate. The transept arms and the choir are divided by blind arches. The church interior is spanned by a wooden barrel vault.

Furnishing

Much of the furnishings were brought into the church after the expansion. However, some pieces of equipment are older.

The canteen of the high altar rests on stipes on sandstone whose medallion in the middle represents the Lamb of God . In a three-part vierzoniges rises altarpiece on a predella . In the middle there is a niche decorated with vine leaves. Above it is a tabernacle, the doors of which are decorated with evangelist symbols. The inside shows painted angels with a censer . To the left and right of the niche are two praying angels; above a pelican . Further outwards follow aedicules in which the figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul are set.

The two side altars in the north and south transept are dedicated to Anna and Joseph of Nazareth . The Anna Altar, whose cafeteria rests on stipes, has a medallion in the middle with the letters SA for Saint Anna . Above it is a tiered predella with a tabernacle. The three-part altarpiece shows Saint Anne teaching her daughter Maria in the middle. On the left the altar shows the offering of Jesus in the temple, on the right the passage to the temple of Mary. The Joseph altar corresponds and shows the letters SIO for Saint Joseph in the medallion . The middle image shows Joseph with the Christ child. It is flanked by Joseph's betrothal to Mary on the left and Joseph's death on the right. On the consoles next to the external representations there are figures of Saint Liborius and Saint Ursula on the left, Monika and Boniface on the right.

From the time before the church was rebuilt, a baroque font has been preserved in the north aisle . The organ consists of a seven-lane prospectus , which is painted with flower patterns. The only surviving window is in the south transept and shows the Ascension of Christ. All other windows were later re-glazed.

In the sacristy of the church there are several old oak cabinets. A safe from the construction period is embedded in the west wall, the fittings of which are also from this period.

On wall figures from the 18th century there are depictions of St. John Nepomuk , St. Agnes and Maria Immaculata. New are figures of the instruction of Mary, St. George , St. Franz Xaverius , St. Barbara , an unidentifiable bishop and St. Catherine . In the organ gallery there are figures of St. Anthony of Padua , St. Agnes, Maria Immaculata, St. Franz Xaverius, St. Elisabeth of Thuringia as well as a Pope and two monks. The figures of two monks, a bishop, Christ as a good shepherd and Christ Salvator Mundi have been moved from the former pulpit to the gallery. Particularly noteworthy are the figure of Maria Regina Coeli with the Christ child, crown and scepter in a splendid robe in front of the northern choir pillar and a plastered Sacred Heart figure next to the Joseph altar. Both figures are from the time the church was built.
