The Catholic branch church St. Katharina auf dem Rain (also called Rainkirche ) is located halfway between the castle and the city of Bruneck in South Tyrol . It belongs to the dean's office of Bruneck in the diocese of Bozen-Brixen ( ecclesiastical province of Trento ) and is a listed building . With its striking tower, it forms the city's landmark together with Bruneck Castle .

history

The oldest church within the old city walls of Bruneck was donated by Nikolaus Stuck in 1340 as the Holy Spirit Chapel and subsequently served as the family's burial place. The patronage changed in the 17th century to St. Katharina , the chapel was baroque in 1675 and expanded into a church. The Rain Church was also damaged in the great city fire of 1723, so that the tower had to be renewed in 1724 and received its current appearance with the onion domes. Due to the exposed location above the city, the platform on the tower was the night watchman's observation point . He was still working here until 1972.

There is a legend about the church bell. When the bell was about to be sold, twelve horses could no longer move it on the downhill path and a note fell from the sky. It read: “My name is Katharina, / I know all the weather. / I'll chase away all the weather, / and I'll stay in the Rainturm. ”When the bell was brought back, two horses were enough for it.
