The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Kilian is a Gothic hall church in Scheßlitz in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg . It belongs to the parish of St. Kilian Scheßlitz in the dean's office Hallstadt / Scheßlitz of the Archdiocese of Bamberg .

History and architecture

The lower tower floors come from a previous building from the end of the 13th / beginning of the 14th century. The choir was rebuilt around 1400, the nave in the first half of the 15th century, with an older cemetery chapel dated 1449 being included as a confessional chapel. The tower was raised in 1571, the nave was vaulted around 1624 by Hans (or Johannes) Bonalino ; a keystone is marked with a stonemason's mark HB.

The very stately church has buttresses on the exterior and a surrounding coffin cornice . The staggered hall of four bays is closed on the inside by a net vault with plaster ribs, the arcades are supported by round pillars. The retracted choir of two bays ends in a three-eighths closure , the services of the ribbed vault end over consoles. The confessional chapel with a reticulated vault is provided with a portal vestibule from the 16th century. A stone gallery is built into the west yoke.

Furnishing

The main piece of the splendid furnishings is the high altar with classicistic echoes from 1787 by Johann Bernhard Kamm using the old altar from 1719. The altar sheet depicting the martyrdom of the titular saint was created in 1780 by Andreas II. Mattenheimer. The side altars and the altar of the confessional chapel date from 1752 by Franz Anton Thomas. The well-designed pulpit was created around 1780 like the structure with the baptism of Christ behind the baptismal font of Kamm. The choir stalls were made in 1782. Numerous baroque figures and stations of the cross from the second half of the 18th century complete the furnishings.

In the choir there is an important epitaph of the chest with a picture of the deceased in Brünne and plate armor and his from around 1360, the gesture of embracing the deceased is remarkable. Tombs for Friedrich von Wiesenthau († 1569) on the choir arch and for Wolf Dietrich von Wiesenthau († 1575) in the confessional chapel depict the deceased and their wives before the crucified and were possibly created by Veit Baumhauer. On the outside of the choir head there is a crucifix from the second half of the 14th century, a Deësis from the middle of the 14th century and a rustically crafted Mount of Olives group from around 1700 in an open chapel from the Degler workshop.

The organ is the work of EF Walcker & Cie. Ludwigsburg from 1961 with 31 stops on two manuals and pedal .
