The Catholic parish church of St. Kunibert is a listed church building on Kunibertstrasse. 5 in Büderich , a district of Werl in the Soest district of North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

A pastor (Johann Smalbein) in Büderich was first mentioned in 1589.

The Romanesque predecessor church was so dilapidated in 1863/64 that the pastor Wilhelm Cruse obtained permission from the church authorities to demolish the building. The appearance is passed down through a lithograph from the 19th century. The tower of the old church was supposed to be preserved, but it collapsed during the night after the church was demolished on August 10, 1863.

The foundation stone for the new church was laid on May 8, 1864. The building was erected in Grünsandstein from 1863 to 1866 under the direction of Arnold Güldenpfennig. The choir is built on a polygonal plan. The west tower, octagonal in the free storeys, dominates the townscape. The interior is spanned by ribbed vaults.

Until 1897 the parish in Sönnern also belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Kunibertus in Büderich.
