The Catholic parish church St. Laurentius (Laurentiusstraße 10) in the Lengfeld district of Würzburg is a hall church in the style of the late Baroque classicism from 1802. It has become too small for the populous district of Lengfeld and has been supplemented by the ecumenical center St. Lioba.

history

History of the old village church

There is no archival evidence of when the first church was built in Lengfeld. The patronage of St. Lawrence suggests that there was a church there as early as the 10th century. According to tradition, the whole village, including the church building, burned down in 1385. For the first archival church in 1408, the then St. Burkard monastery had the construction load of the roof. This Gothic church was cremated on April 28, 1593 in the village fire caused by the wife of the mayor. The reconstruction took place in the Julius Echter period and was completed on April 27, 1602 with the transfer of relics of Simon, Judas, Maria virginis etc. from the Neumünster Church during the consecration by Auxiliary Bishop Sang. One can assume a church in the same place as the previous buildings because the church or cemetery surrounded the church. In this Counter-Reformation period, it certainly had a pointed tower, like many churches in the diocese today.

The church was the center of the village on a small hill until that fateful day of the battle between the Austrians and the French on September 3, 1796. After the siege by the French, the whole village was set on fire by the Austrians to drive the French out. This succeeded, but the entire place including the school, shepherd's house and church except for 7 houses was destroyed. The Lengfelder immediately set about rebuilding.

The late baroque-classical parish church of the village of Lengfeld was consecrated in 1804. The interior furnishings come from dissolved monasteries (e.g. the high altar from the former St. Stephen's monastery, the altarpiece of which shows the martyrdom of St. Lawrence of Rome). Heinz Schiestl's Way of the Cross dates from 1897. Schiestl and his father built the two side altars. They also made a figure for carrying processions. Between 1890 and 1910 the chancel was expanded and the sacristy added. In 1990 the church was renovated.

Ecumenical Center Lengfeld

At the end of the 1960s, the old parish church of St. Laurentius had become too small due to many new arrivals. There was also no parish hall or community center in Lengfeld. With the growth of the then suburban community, many Protestant families moved in, for whom they wanted to build their own Protestant church with a community center. Ecumenical construction was carried out on the basis of suggestions from the citizens. The construction of the Ecumenical Center was completed in 1975. The consecration of the churches took place on December 6th and 7th, 1975 by Bishop Josef Stangl and District Dean Rudolf Meisner.

The ecumenical center consists of a Protestant and a Catholic part. The Holy Spirit Choir is the Protestant church, the Holy Cross Choir the Catholic Church, which is also the parish church for the Catholic parish of St. Laurentius. Both churches are connected to community rooms that are used jointly.

monument

The church is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments. It is described there as follows:

“Hall church with retracted three-sided choir and saddle roof, facade with curved gable and slightly protruding tower with onion dome, plasterwork with ashlar elements, classicism still oriented towards the late baroque, 1802; with equipment. "
