History and architecture

The church of St. Laurentius is mentioned for the first time in 1306. The right to appoint the pastor belonged to the Abbey of Kornelimünster. The parish rights, handed down as early as 1338, were however controversial. In 1450 and at the beginning of the 16th century it was a branch church of the parish church of St. Remigius in Bergheim. Possibly because the church was not allowed to carry out baptisms and was therefore not a fully equipped parish under canon law . At the beginning of the 16th century, the Laurentius Patronage replaced the older dedication to St. Catherine. In the middle of the 18th century, Quadrath-Ichendorf finally received parish rights and became completely independent of Bergheim.

The medieval church building was probably built from the tuff stones that were partially re-used in the new building in the 16th century. In 1532 the church caught fire after a lightning strike and was badly damaged. In the same year work began on the new building, which was largely completed in 1535.

The church initially consisted of a three-bay main nave with a choir and a north aisle as well as a two-storey west tower. This type of building is known as an "asymmetrical two-aisled hall church with a projecting west tower". In the early 17th century a south aisle was built and the church was extended by a yoke to the east. The church consists mainly of bricks with layers of tuff inserted in the older parts. In 1913 the church was expanded. An enlarged main choir was built, a transverse wing on the north side and a modern sacristy .

Outside on the north wall of the choir there is a crucifixion group made of baked clay. It shows the crucified Christ, his mother Mary and the evangelist John and dates from the first half of the 19th century. It originally served as the church's altar cross, but was moved to the outside area during the renovation in 1913. A sandstone relief was set in on the west side of the south aisle in the outer area. It dates from the first half of the 16th century and shows the bowed Christ under the weight of the cross. In 1980 the sandstone relief was moved to the interior of the church. There is a valuable triptych above the door in the organ area . The oil painting, created at the beginning of the 16th century, shows the Descent from the Cross. Mary Magdalene and Nicodemus are depicted on the two side wings.
