history

The former church building on January 24, 2009
The tower was demolished on January 19, 2009.

In the 1960s the population in the St. Lorenz district increased, and another church building next to the Paul Gerhardt Church was necessary. The foundation stone was laid on June 26, 1966. The church was consecrated on December 8, 1968; Because of its proximity to the Vorwerker cemetery , the patronage of St. Lazarus was chosen . The church served as a place of worship for four decades. A renovation was due at the beginning of the 21st century; it would have cost 30,000 euros.

In 2005 the Vorwerker Diakonie showed interest in the purchase. She wanted to convert the church building into a facility for the disabled. It was not sold because the property was too small for this purpose. Even the temporary demolition of the church was not carried out. However, the church office demanded that the church tower be torn down. On June 12, 2007, the church council decided to give up the church.

On January 20, 2008, the church building was de-dedicated. In addition to the pastors of the congregation, the then Bishop Bärbel Wartenberg-Potter and the then Provost Ralf Meister took part in the last service in the church . The sacred objects such as the baptismal font were brought to the Paul Gerhardt Church after the service.

Since then, the Paul Gerhardt Church, consecrated in 1960 in the street “Am Stadtrand”, has been used as the church's church.

The church building of St. Lazarus was leased to an organ builder. On January 19, 2009 the church tower was demolished. The bell is shipped to Tanzania ; it is given as a gift to a partner church.
