The old St. Lorenz Church in Lübeck was the predecessor of today's St. Lorenz Church .

prehistory

In 1660, the head of the funded by foundation funds, west of the city in today's Lübeck-St. Lorenz located Pestfriedhofs St. Lawrence to be able to build a church. The new house of worship was not only intended to serve the cemetery itself, but also the residents of the surrounding area, who previously had no church of their own. On October 20, the council approved the construction on the condition that the church had to be low enough not to restrict the field of fire of the guns on the city ramparts in the event of a defense .

Establishment and consecration

Construction of the church began on July 27, 1661 under the direction of master carpenter Hans Velthusen and master mason Hans Wulff . A simple half-timbered building was created, 28.80 meters long, 10.80 meters wide and 15 meters high up to the roof ridge . Above the west facade, the church was crowned by a small roof turret. St. Lorenz was completed at the end of 1664. The total cost of the construction was around 12,000 Luebian marks .

After completion of the church building, St. Lorenz could not be consecrated immediately because there were legal disagreements: Until the construction of St. Lorenz, the city church of St. Petri was responsible for the foreland of the Holsten Gate and accordingly had fees from the residents for official church acts can move in. The new church would have lost these powers; accordingly the board of directors of St. Petri tried to prevent the consecration. Only after lengthy negotiations could St. Lorenz be consecrated on November 21, 1669 by its first pastor, Lucas Stolterfoht . His successor was the pugnacious Franz Wörger after his death in 1673 .

Further story and end

St. Lorenz served as the church of the sparsely populated area in front of the Holsten Gate for over two centuries. When the suburb of St. Lorenz grew considerably after the gate was lifted in 1864, the small building could no longer meet the requirements of a larger community, so that a new building seemed necessary. Johannes Bernhard started here in 1882 as the second pastor and became its main pastor in 1898. He was one of the strongest advocates for the rebuilding of the church. In February 1899, the church was finally torn down and the new St. Lorenz Church was built on the same site .

From the furnishings of the old church, the altar by the sculptor Jakob von Santen with a painting by Jürgen Kunckel came to the George Chapel in Bad Schwartau , where it is still located today. The sermon pulpit was moved to the Katharinenkirche and is also still there. Only the baptismal of Dietrich Jürgen Boy was transferred to the new St. Lawrence Church.
