The Georgskapelle ("Siechenkapelle St. Georg") is a chapel in Bad Schwartau . After the St. Fabian Church in Rensefeld, it is the second oldest building in the city.

The chapel is a simple building made of brick in the style of High Gothic with three arched windows on each side and one (with roof tiles covered) pitched roof .

On the left side of the gable there are some coats of arms carved in sandstone . Due to the severe weathering , only one can be recognized as that of the bishop.

history

The chapel dates to a 1258 from Lübeck Bishop John II. Of Diest equipped infirmary ( Domus leprosy ) that Schwartau hospice for lepers back. The infirmary, the residents of which were obliged to lead a monastic life, received a chapel in 1289. After the leprosy subsided, the infirmary fell into disrepair from the middle of the 15th century and was finally converted into a nursing home.

Today's chapel was built on the foundations of the chapel from 1280 in 1508.

The chapel has an eventful history, in which it has experienced various uses and also narrowly escaped decay and demolition:

  • In 1806 (during the French period ) it was used as a stable for a while
  • In 1813 the chapel was closed due to its poor condition
  • In 1839 the chapel was renovated and used again for a quarterly church service
  • 1844 was Schwartauer altar in the Official house of the Department Schwartau brought
  • In 1845 the chapel served as a shelter for the homeless
  • In 1847 the chapel served as a soup kitchen
  • In 1857 it became the property of the Schwartau community (after the Schwartau infirmary was closed )
  • In 1877 the chapel was sold to the Free Irish Congregation and again served as a place of worship
  • In 1888 the community of Schwartau bought the chapel back and renovated it
  • In 1901 the Schwartau Altar returned to the chapel
  • In 1926 the Schwartau Altar was loaned to the St. Anne's Museum in Lübeck for ten years .
  • In 1937 the chapel passed to the parish
  • After 1945 the chapel was extensively renovated and used for church services

Today the chapel is made by the Ev.-Luth. Parish Bad Schwartau used for church services.

On June 24, 2008, a wooden campanile was erected next to the Georgskapelle .

The first altar still known today originally stood as a grand piano reredos of the circle society in their chapel in the Lübeck Katharinenkirche and from there reached the Georgskapelle at the beginning of the 17th century. From 1841 to 1901 it was kept in the Schwartau administrative building because the chapel had to be repaired. From 1901 to 1926 he was again in the Georgskapelle. This original Schwartau altar of the Georgskapelle has been in the St. Anne's Museum in Lübeck since 1926 .

He was one of Jakob von Santen created baroque altar with three-piece cartilage essay published in 1674, consisting of the St. Lorenz Church Lübeck former originates replaced. Jürgen Kunckel created the paintings in 1677.
