St. Louis Union Station is the former central station of St. Louis , Missouri . It now serves as a shopping center and is dedicated to the US National Historic Landmark .
history
The station was built in 1892-1894, the architect was Theodore Link. Was once the railway junction in the Midwest 's busiest passenger station in the world, he is now a shopping center and a tourist attraction. It was opened on September 1, 1894, it comprised 32 tracks and was used by 22 different railway companies at its best. The owner was the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis . In 1903, on the occasion of the 1904 World's Fair , the Louisiana Purchase Exposition , the station was expanded.
In the 1940s the number of passengers was around 100,000 a day, but fell dramatically in the decades that followed. In 1971, Amtrak only ran three trains a day to St. Louis. In 1978 the last train left St. Louis Union Station. The Amtrak train station is now part of the St. Louis' Gateway Transportation Center, which is where the city and greyhound buses and rapid transit lines stop.
In August 1985 the station building was reopened as a shopping center. The investment was $ 150 million. A hotel with 539 rooms, a shopping mall and restaurants are part of the complex. The hotel was initially operated by Omni, then by the Hyatt Regency chain, and from December 2008 by Marriott.
