St. Margareth

The Church of St. Margareth in Augsburg is a former monastery church of the Dominican Sisters and is used today by the St. Petrus Society. The church is a monument that is entered in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

The Dominican convent of St. Margareth in Augsburg goes back to a foundation in the 13th century. According to tradition, the cathedral canon Wolfhard von Roth (from 1288 Bishop of Augsburg) built the monastery for the ladies in Leuthau near Schwabmünchen in 1262 and paid 25 guilders for their acceptance into the Dominican order . The previous Gothic building was destroyed in 1333. In 1521 the church was rebuilt from scratch. After the repeal by the city council in 1538 due to insufficient income, the monastery and the again destroyed church came into the hands of the neighboring Heilig-Geist-Spital . Around 1540 the monastery was returned to the Dominican Sisters. In 1594 the church was rebuilt and left to the Catholic benefactors of the Heilig-Geist-Spital for use. After several modifications, the baroque church building that exists today was built in 1720 according to old plans from 1618/1620. In 1915 the left wing of the former monastery was demolished because of a road breach. In 2010 the facade was renovated and the roof was renewed.

Furnishing

The high altar picture was painted by Thomas Scheffler in 1740 and shows Maria with St. Margaret, as well as the Saints Cosmas and Damian . The pulpit from 1744 is crowned by a sound cover with a globe and an eagle. The ceiling fresco was painted by Johann Josef Anton Huber in 1803 and shows the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

In the sacristy there are fragments of a sandstone Madonna around 1330 and a figure of Jesus around 1490.
