Parish Church of St. Margaretha

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Margaretha is a church building in Ramsbeck , a district of Bestwig in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) that characterizes the town. The Vicarie was elevated to a parish in 1861 .

History and architecture

Because of the influx of miners, the old church had become too small. The previous church was built in 1848 instead of a chapel . It was partially demolished in 1952, and the remaining part houses a supermarket.

The foundation stone of the new church was laid on December 1, 1935. The six- bay building was built in 1935/36 according to plans by the architect Josef Ferber and inaugurated on December 8, 1936. The church building is considered to be a characteristic solution for the architect, it unfolds its effect from the side. The altar house adjoins the wider, rectangular nave . The eaves of the nave are higher than that of the altar house and the corners are bevelled. The church tower is half drawn into the nave, the tower of the church in Amecke served as a model. Tower and chancel are bulging with tent roofs crowned, the ship is equipped with a gable roof covered. The hood over the chancel is intended as a design counterweight to the tower. The walls are divided on both sides by four arched windows and two round windows, the lead glass windows were designed by the glass painter Freericks from Hamm. The plastered walls stand on stone plinths, they are adapted to the local development. The barrel-like light vaults in the interior look like a continuous unit. In the slightly raised altar house a domed vault rests over a pendentif . An extensive renovation of the interior was carried out in 2004, the church painter Marie-Luise Daehne from Berlin redesigned the church together with the art blacksmith Walter Schneider from Berlin. In the church square there is a figure of St. Barbara , she is the patron saint of miners.
