St. Mary's Visitation

The St. Mary's Visitation Church , built from 1965 to 1967, is a Roman Catholic church building in the Überruhr -Hinsel district of Essen . It is a branch church of the parish of St. Josef Essen Ruhr Peninsula in the Essen city dean of the Essen diocese . The name is based on the predecessor church of St. Maria Visitation, built in 1874. After mining damage, it was demolished in early 1969 because it was in disrepair. The neo-Gothic building was the first parish church in Überruhr.

St. Mary's Visitation will be profaned in the near future . The associated community home was given up in summer 2020.

History and old church building

In 1800 a small chapel was inaugurated as the first place of worship for the few inhabitants of the Ruhr peninsula. Due to the mining boom, however, the population grew rapidly and the prayer house reached the limit of its capacity. Without further ado, a piece of land was purchased above the cemetery and the construction of a larger church began. The foundation stone was laid on May 18, 1873. Almost a year later, on Ascension Day, the first Eucharist could be celebrated in St. Mary's Visitation. In September 1874 the bell tower was also completed and received the consecration from the Archbishop of Cologne, Philippus Cardinal Krementz . The two side altars were also consecrated five years later. A total of 574,000 bricks were used to build the neo-Gothic church at Hinseler Hof.

For 86 years, St. Maria Visitation was the home parish of Ganz Überruhr until it was replaced by the Rectorate Parish of St. Suitbert in Holthausen. Serious damage to the building became evident in 1958 as a result of mining and subsidence. In 1969 the church was demolished. The third church building, St. Mary's Visitation, was consecrated on July 1, 1967 by Bishop Franz Hengsbach . Which was designed processional church by architects and civil engineers A. Burghartz and H. G. foot.

St. Mary's Visitation (today's church building)

Today's church is a modern looking brick building. The altar cross, tabernacle and steles were created by Manfred Bergmeister from Munich, while the ambo and the way of the cross were created by the Mülheim artist Ernst Rasche . The church windows were designed by the Krefeld glass painter Hubert Spierling . The Seifert organ , the baptismal font, the Pietà , the figures of saints Maria and Joseph and the statues of St. Heinrich and St. Theodor took over. The latter are on the pillars at the entrance to the community hall. A chalice and a monstrance date from 1856. They were donated by the local farmers and already used in the small chapel.
