St. Maria im Pesch
St. Maria im Pesch (from Latin pasculum for "meadow" or "cemetery") is the name of a former Catholic church in Cologne , which stood in the north of Cologne Cathedral - in today's atrium of the cathedral. The church served as a parish church for the cathedral staff.
The Marienkapelle, initially located on the south-western transept of the cathedral, appeared for the first time in 1148 under the name of Sancta Maria in pasculo ("in Pesch"). In 1302 an altar was donated to the church by cathedral vicar Heinrich von Blanckenberg. Before 1508, a new church was built for St. Maria im Pesch, which was now built on the foundations of the north transept facade (with the unfinished east portal) of the unfinished Cologne Cathedral. From the choice of the construction site, art historians today conclude that no further construction of the Cologne Cathedral was planned at this point in the long term. In 1801 the city district, which formerly belonged to St. Maria im Pesch, was declared a parish of Cologne Cathedral. In 1843 St. Maria im Pesch was canceled.
Among other things, a late Gothic burial group made from painted sandstone from around 1500 has been preserved from the church's furnishings . The group of figures stands today, with a neo-Gothic canopy , in the northern tower hall of Cologne Cathedral as the 14th station on the Way of the Cross .
