History and architecture

A first predecessor chapel is documented for the 8th century, it was designated as old in 939 and was extended to the mother church of the Mark Breitungen. The Romanesque substructure of the tower dates from around 1220. The hall church from the post-Gothic period has a flat roof and a three-sided double gallery .

Furnishing

The church houses works of art from different centuries.

  • The winged altar from 1518 is considered to be significant in terms of art history. It shows carvings and paintings depicting the Little Passion after Albrecht Dürer . Presumably it was made by a Franconian master, with Hans Nussbaum possibly also being considered.
  • The octagonal sandstone font was created in the 17th century. It is decorated with eight depictions of angels in waving robes.
  • The heptagonal wooden pulpit was built between 1615 and 1616. Dark inlays are inlaid in light wood.
  • 49 oil paintings with representations from the Old and New Testament are attached to the parapet of the lower gallery . They were painted in 1615.
  • Epitaphs for officials and pastors of the community are exhibited in the churchyard and in the choir room.
