History and architecture

The Karnaper parish church of St. Marien, built in the neo-Gothic style in 1895/96 , was destroyed in 1944 during the Second World War. The community initially used the current parish home designed by the architect Steinrötter as an emergency church. In 1959 an architectural competition was announced. The new church was then the architect Hans Schilling built on the site and on September 8, 1963 the feast Nativity of Mary , consecrated . The design of the building is based on the Neu St. Alban church in Cologne , one of the most famous works by Hans Schilling. The pentagonal floor plan connects to the semicircular chancel.

The church was since September 2007 a branch church of the parish of St. Hippolytus in Gelsenkirchen-Horst .

The profanation was performed on February 10, 2019 in a Eucharistic celebration with Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck . The parish hall will continue to exist and will in future also be a space for church services and parish life.
