The church

The Evangelical Church of St. Marien is in the center of Saalburg in the municipality of Saalburg-Ebersdorf in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

history

The church was built from 1206 to 1223 near the village as the main church of the Cistercian monastery " Zum Heiligen Kreuz ". After the destruction around Schleiz in the Thirty Years' War , the place became the seat of the Russian rule . This short period of reign left its mark on the inside of the church in the stalls , the choir and the royal box .

In 1847 and at the end of 1950 the main church at that time was renovated and partially modernized. Nevertheless, the remarkable traces of the past centuries have been preserved. The high altar from 1665 by Berthold Pertes from Schleiz is still in the choir . The font dates from 1660.

In the church tower hang three steel bells dating back to the 1920s.

The organ from 1842 is from the Schleizer organ builder Schilling .
