St. Marien (Wyk auf Föhr)
St. Marien is the Roman Catholic Church in Wyk auf Föhr . It is a branch church of St. Gertrud in Niebüll .
history
From the Reformation to the Second World War there was no Catholic community on Föhr . Since the provincial government had refused to build a Catholic church, in 1899 a Protestant master mason built a neo-Gothic chapel privately in Mühlenstrasse and rented it to the Bishop of Osnabrück for pastoral care . In 1904 the chapel could then be bought by the local bishop's chair. She received the patronage of the Immaculate Conception of Mary . A permanent local congregation only came into being with the influx of Catholic expellees after the war. The Marienkapelle was enlarged in 1955 and received a roof turret with a bell. When the enlarged chapel was no longer sufficient, today's Marienkirche was built on Rebbelstieg in 1974 . The chapel was profaned and sold. Today there is a restaurant in the building.
Architecture and equipment
St. Mary's is a modern church hall in brick with attached rectangular bell tower. The floor plan has the shape of a rhombus , the transverse axis of which is the ridge of the flat gable roof . Wide stained glass window strips are embedded on both sides under the eaves .
The bright interior is aligned with the flattened diamond tip with the altar area. The altar , ambo and tabernacle stele are made of white stone. The back wall of the altar is covered by a large mosaic of the risen Christ.
The organ was consecrated in November 1988.
