The Protestant town church of St. Marien stands on a hill in the middle of the small town of Bleicherode in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .

history

The town church in the small town of Bleicherode was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque sacred building. Only the church tower is partially preserved from this building . As early as 1411, the community was so large and financially strong that the building in the Gothic style was fundamentally changed again and again through renovations and extensions.

This church itself

Above the main portal there is a no longer clearly definable high relief. It bears the year 1411. Furthermore, holy figures and a consecration cross are carved. The year of the church can be clearly seen.

Friedrich Knauf from Großtabarz (near Waltershausen) built a two-manual organ with 25 stops for the town church of St. Marien . 61 years later (1898) his nephew Robert, who took over the father's workshop in Bleicherode, built a completely new organ with now 26 sounding parts on 2 manuals with an elaborately designed neo-baroque prospectus, above all as a reference instrument for his workshop on site. This organ was completely restored in 2013 (Brode, Heiligenstadt).

The altar

Around 1968 to 1973 serious damage to the building fabric was evident. Therefore, restoration work became necessary. The church interior was also redesigned in a Protestant style. The church was saved from deterioration, thanks to Pastor Dr. Heinrich Müller and the partner municipality Rüsselsheim .

The altar retable from 1710 is now in a separate room behind the altar table. Two winding columns support the horizontally divided altar panel. A lower painting shows the scene of the Lord's Supper and the upper one shows the prayer of Christ . In front of it there is an altar plate, above it the golden cross.

St. Marien was voted "Church of the Year 2019" by the Foundation for the Preservation of Church Monuments in Germany .
