The church of St. Marien , consecrated in 2012, is the Roman Catholic church of Saturdayern , a village in the municipality of Richterswil . It is currently (as of 2016) the second youngest Catholic church in the canton of Zurich after the Church of St. Mauritius (Bonstetten ZH) from 2016 and before the churches of St. Leonhard (Feuerthalen) and St. Franziskus (Uetikon am See) , both from 2008.

Development and construction history

In 1938 the first Marien chapel was built on Bergstrasse . This was a wooden church that had previously stood in Hallau . Because the Marienkapelle did not have enough space for the parish work and the building fabric had become poor, an architecture competition was announced in 2010, which was won by the architects Forster & Uhl Architects , Zurich .

In January 2011 the old Marienkapelle was dismantled and on February 12th 2012 the newly built Marienkirche was inaugurated by the Chur bishop Vitus Huonder . From April to August 2015, the inadequate interior insulation will be completely replaced.

The St. Marien church in Saturdayern belongs to the Catholic parish of Richterswil , which with its 3,986 members (as of 2017) is one of the medium-sized parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Building description

Church tower and exterior

The Marienkirche is set back on Bergstrasse in Saturdayern. The structure divides the plot into a public front area with parking facilities and a private garden protected by hedges and bushes, which is located behind the church center.

The building has two differently sloping roofs, of which the steeper one rises above the church, so that it flows into the bell tower at its highest point . A simple cross that towers above the building on the street side at the height of the altar indicates the church's use of the building.

Interior and artistic equipment

inside view

Through the entrance portal clad with bronze panels, the visitor enters the interior of the church center. The side rooms are separated from the church with folding walls. When they are opened, the church seats 150 people with full seating.

The church service room is well shielded from the busy cantonal road, but has a window front on the rear side that can also be opened in summer so that church services and events can also take place outdoors.

The roof above the altar is glazed, so that daylight can fall into the chancel across the full width of the choir wall, which underlines the importance of the choir area through the use of light. Artificial light shines from lamps hanging from the ceiling on rods.

organ

Console of the Kuhn organ from 1956

The Marienkirche has an organ that was built in 1956 and was previously installed in the Abbey Church of Hauterive . The fact that the instrument does not have a case apart from 15 prospect pipes in front of three high rectangular sound holes was architecturally taken into account by allowing a niche in the choir wall of the church that is adapted to the size of the organ.

It is a mechanical organ from the company Kuhn , Männedorf with originally 17 stops on two manuals including a pedal . In 2015 Orgelbau Kuhn expanded the instrument by adding a 16 ′ bass in the pedal to 18 registers.
