The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Martin is a Gothic hall church in the district of Unterknöringen of Burgau in the Swabian district of Günzburg . It belongs to the parish community Burgau in the deanery Günzburg of the diocese of Augsburg .

History and architecture

The church is a uniform, whitewashed brick building, which was executed in the years 1481–1484 by master Moritz von Mindelheim. It consists of a single nave, flat-roofed nave with windowless north and west walls and a retracted choir with a five-sided end and ribbed vaults. On the north side a squat, square tower with bow Friesen and gables is without spire disposed. The door and window openings are highlighted with a conspicuous, three-color painted cuboid. In the choir there are remains of wall paintings dated 1544 above the east window, which show three angels in half-length.

Furnishing

The high altar was created in 1947 and is furnished with artistically valuable, life-size figures that were made in Ulm around 1484. They represent a crescent moon Madonna with Saints Nicholas and Katharina as well as Barbara and Wolfgang (according to another source: Konrad). Above the left side altar is a crucifixion group from around 1720 on the left, and on the right a painting with the donation of Saint Martin's coat from the end of the 17th century Century as well as figures of Saints Ulrich and Nicholas and a Pietà from around 1484 attached. A sacrament niche is provided with a relief of a Man of Sorrows and a kneeling donor, probably an Augsburg work around 1520. The pulpit dates from between 1710 and 1720. A sandstone figure of St. Barbara was made around 1440/1450. A depiction of St. Martin on horseback and a palm donkey date from the second half of the 15th century.

Among the numerous grave monuments, some of which are valuable, are the coat of arms stones for Eberhard von Knöringen († 1352) and his wife († 1361) and for Konrad von Knöringen († 1395) in the nave . In the choir there is a red marble slab for Ulrich von Knöringen († 1536) with a representation of the deceased as a full figure with armor. A grave monument rich in figures with an elaborate aedicular framing for Ulrich von Knöringen († 1602) is attributed to Michael Schaller the Younger. Several epitaphs by Loy Hering with a related composition of the deceased kneeling before the crucified in a simple Renaissance niche were created for:

  • Ulrich von Knöringen († 1527),
  • Konrad von Knöringen († 1534),
  • Wilhelm von Knöringen († 1535),
  • Hans von Knöringen († around 1537),
  • Maria von Rechberg († 1542).

The full-length relief for Adelheid von Knöringen, created after 1526, also comes from Loy Hering.
