history

Previous construction

The parish of St. Matthias goes back to a chapel foundation in 1381. With the approval of the Aachen Marienstift and the then responsible parish of Laurensberg , the knight Matthias von Berensberg (Mathias von Bernsberg) and his wife Klara had a private chapel built to the patron saint St. Matthias was consecrated and its only purpose was that regular masses for the salvation of the soul of the founder, his family and descendants were read there. The building was made of rubble stone with small round windows and a low bell tower with a blunt tip. The roof was covered with slate. The foundation also included the right of patronage , which from then on lay with the lord of Berensberg Castle .

The chapel was not very large, about 12 to 14 meters long and 5 to 7 meters wide. From the 18th century it was increasingly used as a church by the residents of the area and was considered a pastoral care center for the Laurensberg parish. On July 12, 1811, Madame Mère , Napoleon's mother, and Napoleon's sister Pauline visited the chapel for prayer. Since then, the former Bergerbusch, a forest area east of Berensberg, has been called Paulinenwäldchen to this day.

In 1888 the chapel was demolished to make way for a larger new building.

Parish church

The foundation stone for the new church was laid on March 31, 1889. The first mass was held in the new building on June 29, 1890, and the consecration took place on October 12 by the then Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Anton Fischer . The neo-Romanesque brick church with nave and transept was designed by the architect and Aachen church builder Peter Friedrich Peters . The west tower has a high octagonal point. The clock was installed in 1898.

In 1949/1950 the windows destroyed in the Second World War were replaced. The new designs are all by the Aachen glass painter Maria Katzgrau , only one window in the aisle by Anne Schneider-Lang. In 1955 the church got a new portal, in 1970 the chancel was rebuilt according to the Second Vatican Council .

St. Matthias, which originally belonged to the Laurensberg parish, later to the Richterich parish , was raised to an independent parish in 1921 and merged in 2010 with the neighboring parishes to form the large parish Christ our peace.
