Saint Mauritius, patron of the parish church in Neufra

The parish church of St. Mauritius is the Roman Catholic parish church of the municipality of Neufra in the district of Sigmaringen . The church was built between 1860 and 1862 in neo-Gothic style under the royal Hohenzollern court architect Josef Laur and pastor Felix Bürkle. The church is dedicated to Saint Mauritius , the patron saint of the army, infantry, knife and weapon smiths, artisans who handle dark paint and horses.

construction

The foundation stone was laid on October 17, 1860. Almost exactly two years later to the day, on October 19, 1862, the church was ready for use. However, the consecration , which was carried out by Bishop Lothar von Kübel , did not take place until eleven years later, on September 22, 1873.

The building of the church had become necessary because the previous church had become too small. The previous building, which was built from 1603 to 1605 by the nobleman Albrecht von Speth as a burial place for his family, had a capacity of 240 seats in the nave and 200 more in two galleries. In the middle of the 19th century, however, Neufra had predominantly Catholic residents in 1372 . The town's 200 or so schoolchildren alone almost filled the church. So the decision was made to build a new building. However, this turned out to be smaller than originally planned. The reason for this was that the Fehla should have been built over during the original planning , as there was not enough space. So the church was planned a little smaller so that it fit exactly between Dorfstraße and Fehla. Some buildings had to give way to the new building, including a fire brigade shed, the old school house of the community and the wash house belonging to the rectory. In 2014 the roof and the 40 meter high tower of the church had to be extensively renovated. The costs amounted to over 500,000 euros, of which around 100,000 euros were raised through donations from community members.

art

St. Mauritius is home to a sandstone epitaph from 1610, a tomb of Albrecht and his wife Maria Anna von Riedheim, as well as that of Hans Dietrich von Speth. These works of art are taken from the previous church. The altar panel is considered a neo-Gothic masterpiece. The Madonna comes from the hand of the Heinstetter master. The Way of the Cross , designed by the painter Konstantin Hanner from Gammertingen , was built in 1866 .
