Church of St. Michael from the south

St. Michael is the Catholic parish church in the Swabian Krumbach in the district of Günzburg .

history

The first church building should have been built around 1000 to 1020. However, there are no excavation finds or written evidence of its origin. A pastor from Krumbach was first mentioned in 1386. The current construction was already considered in 1720, but the demolition of the old church did not begin until March 7, 1751. Johann Martin Kraemer was commissioned to rebuild the nave, while the baroque redesign and elevation of the tower, which was still in Gothic form in the 16th century, was commissioned to his father Simpert Kraemer . The building is thus a link in the work of the master builder family. The new building was largely completed in 1752. The ceiling fresco and the south portal bear this year in their chronograms.

On August 10, 1753 Church of the Augsburg Bishop was Francis X. Freiherr von Adelmann ordained . The church was already fitted with altars during the construction work. The outside of the church was renovated in 1853, 1897/98, 1970 and 2007, and interior renovations took place in 1972/73 and 2001/2002. The last structural change was during the renovation in 1972/73, when a space was added between the sacristy in the south and the tower. In the years 2015 to 2018, the roof structure was extensively renovated at a cost of around 1.1 million euros. A comprehensive restoration and reorganization of the organ was also carried out.

Building description

It is a single-nave hall church with a separate choir. The tower was taken over from the previous church and redesigned in Baroque style.

Exterior construction

The tower is on the south side, sloping to the baseline. There are two extensions to the outside of the choir. Another small extension is available between the tower and the sacristy.

inner space

On the west side of the approximately 35 meters long and 13 meters wide nave there is a two-story gallery and the organ on the second floor. The choir has two two-story side chapels.

Furnishing

St. Michael interior

The church is richly decorated in baroque style with frescoes, oil paintings and carvings.

Altars

The four-column high altar stood in the Roggenburg Monastery before 1752 . In 1775 Johann Georg Bergmüller the Younger and Franz Joseph Bergmüller had it redesigned and given the apostles on the side. Johann Baptist Dollenbacher painted the altar sheet around 1852. The paintings of the side altars, also by Dollenbacher around 1852, show the Virgin Mary with Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena on the left, and Saint John Nepomuk in front of King Wenceslaus on the right. The rococo pulpit and the apostle figures in the nave also date from the time it was built around 1752. In a niche there is a life-size crucifix from around 1510/20.

Paintings

Ceiling painting

Most of the numerous frescoes were created by Franz Martin Kuen in 1752 and 1753. The largest fresco takes up almost the entire ceiling area of the main nave. It shows the rebellion of the devil against God's plan of salvation for the redemption of mankind through Jesus. The church patron, St. Michael, is particularly emphasized and is in the fall of the angel. Above the scene, an Immaculate is surrounded by angels. The baby Jesus floats towards them in a ball. A ray of light from a glory with the Holy Trinity as a sign of the Holy Spirit hits Jesus. The four occidental Fathers of the Church are depicted in the corners of the nave, Jerome in the southeast corner , Augustine in the northeast , Ambrose of Milan in the northwest and Gregory the Great in the southwest . Two cartouches on the ceiling in the middle of the nave show the Dominican saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena . On the walls of the main aisle there is a fifteen-part way of the cross in fresco painting with stucco. The 15th station is located in the middle of the lower gallery parapet. The patron saint of music, Saint Cecilia, can be seen in the middle of the upper gallery, on which the organ is located.
