Johann Martin Kraemer

Johann Martin Kraemer (born November 21, 1713 in Edelstetten ; † March 5, 1782 ) was a German builder and architect of the Baroque era .

life and work

Johann Martin Kraemer, the son of the baroque master builder Simpert Kraemer , learned the mason trade like his father and worked with him on many assignments until his death in 1753. Therefore, his buildings can often hardly be distinguished from those of his father. At the age of 20 he took over the property from his parents on lease. In the same year - 1733 - he married Maria Anna Rebay. This comes from a family of merchants who settled in Swabia and originally came from Como .

The first order he received for a new church was in 1740 the parish church of St. Martin in Deubach, northeast of Ichenhausen . The street on which the church is located is named after him.

The contract for the new building of the nave of the parish church of St. Michael in Krumbach in 1751/52 was something special due to the distinctive position of the church in the townscape. His father Simpert Kraemer received the order for the baroque redesign and elevation of the tower, which was still built in the Gothic form in the 16th century . This church building is a link between the work of Simpert Kraemers and Johann Martin Kraemers.

In 1752, six months before his death, Simpert Kraemer was awarded the contract for the Norbertine - Imperial Abbey Roggenburg to build a new monastery church. After the death of his father, Johann Martin Kraemer completed this large church building by 1757.

In the period that followed, Kraemer mainly received orders from the Roggenburg and Ursberg monasteries , for example the church in Oberwiesenbach (1757/58) or the pilgrimage church of Attenhausen in 1759.

The following other church buildings in Central Swabia are attributed to Johann Martin Kraemer on the basis of structural features and the tower design that are typical for Simpert and Johann Martin Kraemer: the tower of the castle and the parish church of Babenhausen , the church in Ungerhausen near Memmingen , the church in Meßhofen near Roggenburg , the Church of Ellzee and the Church of Oberstotzingen . The following churches were rebuilt by Johann Martin Kraemer: the church of Aletshausen (1762), the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Haupeltshofen (1766/67) and probably the field or cemetery chapel of St. Maria in the Westfriedhof in Krumbach (1774);

Others

Johann Martin Kraemer's eldest son, Joachim, who was born in 1740, became, like his grandfather and father, a master mason. He married in Donauwörth , where he settled.
