St. Michael is the first parish church in the Alken wine community, which is over 1000 years old, and is one of the oldest churches on the Moselle . The hall building, which is essentially Romanesque , the west tower from the 13th century and the sacristy from 1547 are almost completely preserved and have been restored to the original. Valuable frescoes and a rich inventory of artistic altars, paintings and statues determine the medieval sensual atmosphere of the room.

history

The church, consecrated to Archangel Michael , first mentioned in 1015 in the document of the Anniversarian Foundation of Archbishop Megingaud von Trier , was the focus of religious life in the Catholic parish in Alken for over 800 years. Since the completion and consecration of the new parish church in 1849 it took a back seat until its historical significance was rediscovered by committed citizens in the second half of the 20th century.

The St. Michaels Brotherhood , which was revitalized from 1981 onwards, carried out restoration and maintenance measures, the uncovering of the ceiling paintings, the return of the baroque side altar (1987), and the furnishings as true to the original as possible . In 2015, a multimedia presentation Time Travel - 1000-year-old Church of St. Michael was completed, which has since been shown at fixed times in the church.

description

About the 14 Stations of the Cross lined steep staircase leads to the entrance area through a sight screen (just below) an insight into the charnel granted. It preserves skeletal remains from the 14th to 18th centuries from the old cemetery equipped with basalt crosses (partly from the 16th century).

The interior of the church is richly and colorfully decorated. The fresco " Christ as Judge of the World " (choir) from 1350 - carefully restored - can be seen in its original colors. The frescoes in the nave were made around 1500. The high altar depicts the adoration of the kings in the middle ; the two wings show the saints Maximilian, Lucia, Cäcilia and Antonius. The left side altar (Michael’s altar) from the Baroque period was initially located in the new parish church after 1849. The baptismal font in the bell tower reminds us that Alken became an independent parish in 1616. The triptych next to it depicts the martyr Stephen , flanked by two evangelists, as well as St. Nicholas (patron of the boatmen) and St. Urban (patron of the winemakers). Further painted wood carvings and individual statues can be found on both sides of the nave.
