St. Michael (Augsburg)
The Catholic cemetery chapel of St. Michael in downtown Augsburg was built from 1603 to 1605 and, after being destroyed, was rebuilt from 1708 to 1712. It is a branch church of St. Moritz and is listed as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.
history
The church, built in honor of St. Michael and all holy angels , was built, possibly according to plans by Elias Holl , from 1603 to 1605 as a longitudinal oval central building. His brother Esaias Holl took over the construction. During the Thirty Years' War it was destroyed by Swedish troops and only rebuilt in 1652. A new consecration took place under Auxiliary Bishop Kaspar Zeiler in 1688. In the course of the War of the Spanish Succession , the church was damaged again on December 2, 1703. From 1708, the reconstruction, financed largely by donations from the Fuggers , took place . The church also received a tower and a vestibule. The consecration took place on August 29, 1712 Auxiliary Bishop Johann Kasimir Röls . During the renovation in 1772, the tower was given an onion dome .
During the air raids on Augsburg in the night of February 25th to 26th, 1944, the roofing of the church was badly damaged and the ceiling fresco was completely destroyed as a result of the penetrating rainwater. According to the damage report at the time, the frescoes were so badly damaged by water that they could no longer be restored, according to the State Office for Monument Preservation . Fragments are said to be in the depot of the municipal art collections in Augsburg . In 1997 a general renovation of the church, which had been repaired in the post-war period, began. As a result, the painting restorer Hermengild Peiker reconstructed the almost 350 m² ceiling fresco in 2002.
Furnishing
The high altar, carved from walnut and flanked by two columns, is crowned with Fugger's double coat of arms. The main altar painting Battle of the Archangel Michael against Lucifer around 1605 is attributed to Johann Matthias Karger . It was painted over by Johann Rieger in 1709. The picture on the right side altar The Lamentation of Christ comes from Joseph Heintz . Johann Georg Bergmüller painted two canvas paintings of Death as Lord of all Estates and the Resurrection of Christ in 1719. The reconstructed ceiling fresco Last Judgment from 1772 and the Stations of the Cross were created by Johann Josef Anton Huber . A wrought iron grille with tendrils was created at the beginning of the 18th century.
