St. Michaelskirche in Paderborn-Sennelager

St. Michael is a Catholic parish church in Sennelager , a district in Paderborn in East Westphalia . Church and parish together with St. Marien in Sande form the pastoral association Sande-Sennelager in the Paderborn deanery of the archbishopric of the same name .

history

Originally, the parishioners in Sennelager belonged to the Catholic parish in Neuhaus Castle . From January 19, 1920, the Catholics in Sennelager celebrated Sunday masses in the Hohenzollernhaus , which Salvatorians acquired. With a deed dated June 27, 1924, the branch community in Sennelager was established. The Salvatorian Father Agathon Boisai became parish vicar. The community numbered 738 Catholics. The congregation set up a monastery chapel, which was also used for church services. On January 17, 1940, the National Socialists confiscated the monastery and expelled the Fathers. The still young community of Sennelager initially had to be looked after by Neuhaus Castle. After the new parish vicar Albert Peters was introduced, the Sunday masses were celebrated in the Hense room . The vicar kept the Holy of Holies in his private apartment.

On September 28, 1940 the laying of the foundation stone of a barrack church could be celebrated. By Christmas of the year, the church members were able to complete the church with their own contributions and the first service was celebrated. After the end of the Second World War , the Salvatorians came back to Sennelager and took over pastoral care.

At the beginning of the 1950s, plans were made to build a new church. On June 14, 1956, Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger from Paderborn was able to break the first sod. It was another two years before the foundation stone was laid on August 17, 1958. Then things made rapid progress so that the topping-out ceremony could be celebrated on November 7th of that year . Archbishop Jaeger consecrated the new church on May 9, 1959 . Shortly afterwards, the construction of the parish home and kindergarten began. The latter was available on February 15, 1962.

On September 27, 1967, the first parish council was elected. In 1981 the Salvatorians withdrew from Sennelager and the secular priest Ludwig Niehörster was entrusted with pastoral care. In 1982, therefore, the construction of the rectory began.

With a deed dated January 1, 1983, the community was raised to an independent parish. The former vicar Niehörster was introduced as the first pastor on April 1, 1983.
