Church of St. Michael from the East

The under monument protection standing Catholic town parish church of St. Michael in Sonthofen in the Allgaeu is a neo-baroque church building. It was first mentioned in 1449 and was renovated by the architect Thomas Wechs after heavy bombing in the Second World War .

Building history

The church was first mentioned in 1449 when it burned down and was rebuilt. However, building findings indicate a much older age. After a heavy bombing raid in the Second World War, Gothic components were found. In 1488 the church was renewed to the west. At the outer northwest corner you can still see a square with this year number.

In another severe fire in 1540, the first altars were also destroyed in addition to serious damage to the church. From 1549 to 1552 the parish church was restored.

In 1695 Hans Weißkopf rebuilt the nave, from 1738 to 1739 the choir was increased. In a further construction period from 1741 to 1742 the nave was again extended to the west and raised at the same time. Franz Kappeler carried out these construction measures . The baroque cladding of the west facade had to be removed in 1863 due to the weather. The tower floor was renewed and replaced by a bell floor with a helmet.

During bombing raids in 1945 the church was badly damaged and the roof structure was destroyed. The windows burst and the organ was damaged. In the post-war years, the church was restored under the direction of the architect Thomas Wechs. Wechsel raised the church another five meters. Until 1951 the destroyed windows and the partly colored stucco ornaments were renewed. The restoration of the ceiling frescoes was postponed to a later date. In 1954 the western sign was added.

From 1973 to 1974 a comprehensive renovation took place with a redesign of the western church square and the reconstruction of the sacristy .

The interior renovation followed in 1984 under the architect Tilbert Zell from Sonthofen. The chancel and the gallery were redesigned. The sculptor Hans Wachter created the folk altar . The ceiling frescoes were painted by Arnulf Heimhofer from Burgberg from 1988 to 1994 .
