St. Nikolai am Gasteig
St. Nikolai am Gasteig is a Roman Catholic church building in Munich . It is dedicated to St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra . With the churches of St. Johann Baptist on Johannisplatz and the Alte Haidhauser Church in Kirchenstrasse, St. Nikolai belongs to the parish of St. Johann Baptist in Haidhausen.
It is a protected monument with the file number D-1-62-000-2904 of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.
location
The church is located on Innere Wiener Straße in the Munich district of Haidhausen on the Isar high bank to the right of the Isar at the southern end of the Maximiliansanlagen . Opposite is the Gasteig culture and education center , and the German Museum is only a few minutes' walk away .
history
The core of the former hospital church is late Gothic; it was rebuilt in 1660. Due to the bombing of the Second World War , the church was closed in December 1944. Shortly after the end of the war, it was reopened at the end of May 1945. The necessary renovation work was not completed until 1950.
Altötting Loreto Chapel
A so-called Loreto chapel is attached to the Nikolaikirche to the rear right .
It was built in 1678. In 1820, the year the parish of St. Johann Baptist was founded, it was demolished without permission and rebuilt on a larger scale. In 1926, a reconstruction based on the model of the Gnadenkapelle in Altötting was finally carried out . On the night of April 24-25, 1944, the chapel burned down completely during the bombing of World War II. On December 10, 1955, after the reconstruction, the consecration of the altar could take place.
