The old Catholic Church of St. Nicholas of Grainet was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It was first mentioned in a document in 1656. Because of its dilapidation, the Freyung priest no longer dared to celebrate in the church , so it was thoroughly restored in 1657. In 1786 it was closed due to dilapidation and destroyed on September 8, 1911 in the great village fire.

It consists of a retracted choir, arched windows, and a choir arch. The nave has two bays, separated by strong pillars, and arched windows.

The altar dates from the middle of the 17th century. The altarpiece shows the church patron St. Nicholas of Myra in the bishop's robe with miter and shepherd's staff , together with St. Catherine and St. Barbara . The legend of the three girls is shown at the bottom of the picture (so-called dowry donation). A rectangular extract with a round medallion in a halo is located on twisted columns entwined with vine leaves .

After the inauguration of the Holy Trinity Church in 1757, the Nikolauskirche was left to decay, in 1786 it was closed due to dilapidation. From 1840 to 1880 it was profaned several times as a fire station , storage room, sacristy and detention center, and the church was restored. In 1888, a prop house (fire-fighting equipment house) was added on the east side. Until 1911 they met every evening for rosary prayers and May devotions in the Nikolauskirche.

The chronicler writes about the church fire in 1911:

The big village fire on September 8th, 1911 in which six residential buildings with outbuildings and the Nikolauskirche burned down. The estimated damage to buildings and furniture was 155,000 marks, of which only 65,000 marks were covered by insurance. 12 families were temporarily made homeless. The fire (it had broken out in the barn of the Schauer'schen inn) jumped from the shower barn onto the shingle roof of the Nikolauskirche. The framework of the bell drawer on the church roof collapsed and the bell itself disappeared into the gulf of the all-destructive fire. The church tower stood there like a burning candle. Suddenly he collapsed. The heavy beams, from which the two bells also hung, fell with a crash. The brick vault was smashed. The windows of the church had long been shattered with a clatter and the flames came out from inside. The right side altar burned while the Mount of Olives figures could be saved. That the high altar was preserved borders on a miracle. But it still has burns on the back. Everything burned together that was made of wood. The three bells were also destroyed. The Nikolauskirche looked like a ruin and it was questionable whether it would ever be rebuilt. "

By autumn 1912, the damage to the village of Grainet had been repaired and the Nikolauskirche was rebuilt. All the houses had been rebuilt in solid construction.

Instead of a side altar, the scene of the Mount of Olives is depicted with wooden figures (Christ and angel with cup of passion) from the 18th century. Further pieces of equipment are a life-size Johannes Nepomuk from the 18th century, a life-size Lourdes Madonna as a reminder of a parish pilgrimage, the wooden statuettes Maria with child, St. Sebastian , St. Anna with Maria and St. Nikolaus, the original fountain figures Maria with child and St. Joseph . Cast in bronze and supplemented with a figure of Santa Claus, they adorn three village fountains along the main street.

In 1995/96 the last major renovation of the roof structure and bell tower as well as the renovation of the outer masonry took place.

In the newly built tower a new one was Maria Goretti bell on July 21, 1996 by local priest Hermann Füßl and the native of Grainet Divine Word missionary Father Joseph Duschl SVD consecrated.
