St. Nikolaus (Osterath)
St. Nikolaus is a Roman Catholic church in Osterath , a district of the city of Meerbusch in the Rhine district of Neuss . It is a branch church of the parish of Hildegundis von Meer.
history
St. Nikolaus was originally a subsidiary church of Willich and was partially independent in 1272. It was not until 1547 that all sacraments could be given in Osterath. In the period that followed, the parish status was repeatedly controversial. From the middle of the 17th century, Osterath was effectively independent, but without a formal parish elevation.
The oldest part of the church is the Romanesque church tower from the 12th century made of tuff with blind arches; it was increased by one storey in 1538. In the course of the Thirty Years War , Hessian troops set the church on fire in 1642, after which the three-aisled nave was restored in 1660.
Due to the growth of the community, a three - aisled neo - Gothic brick basilica was built from 1853 to 1855 according to plans by Vincenz Statz while retaining the tower, which is now an east tower due to the demolition of the old church. Due to lack of space, the large new church could not be erected east of the tower, but the new building was made west of it.
Since January 1, 2010, St. Nikolaus has been a branch church of the newly established Roman Catholic parish Hildegundis von Meer. The parish unites the parishes of the former deanery Meerbusch in the diocese of Aachen .
