St. Nikolaus (Barrenstein)
St. Nikolaus is a Roman Catholic church building in Barrenstein , a district of the city of Grevenbroich in the Rhine district of Neuss .
history
According to a document of the parish archives Allrath St. Nicholas was in 1495 as a private church of Villa Barrenstein built by Wolterus Kreips. The chapel belonged to the parish of Oekoven until 1804 , then to the parish of Allrath.
St. Nicholas was initially built as a simple, single-nave late Gothic chapel with a three-sided choir closure . In 1842 the church was extended to the west. The old chapel was kept when it was decided to build a new one in the 1960s. The foundation stone for a modern brick church was laid in 1969, and it was completed the following year. The liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council was implemented in the new building . The old chapel was restored in 1973 and the 19th century extension was demolished.
