St. Nikolaus (French. Église Saint-Nicolas , ndl. Sint-Niklaaskerk ) is a Roman Catholic church in the old town of the Belgian capital Brussels .

history

The Nikolauskirche goes back to a foundation of Brussels merchants in the 11th or 12th century in honor of their patron saint, St. Nicholas of Myra . The Romanesque building collapsed in 1367 and was replaced by a late Gothic church, which still determines the layout and spatial character of today's church. The main nave was built during the reconstruction after the French bombing of Brussels in 1695. In 1714 the tower collapsed and was not replaced.

Building

St. Nikolaus is surrounded by narrow old town streets. Picturesque little houses are built on the outer walls of the aisles. The church itself is a squat, three-nave, rib-vaulted basilica with transept and Vierungs - roof skylights . The choir is inclined to the left from the longitudinal axis.

Furnishing

The church has a small picture of Our Lady with the sleeping child , an original or a copy after Peter Paul Rubens . Due to destruction and remodeling, most of the rest of the furnishings date from the 19th century, including the neo-Gothic shrine of the martyrs of Gorkum , whose relics were brought to St. Nicholas from the nearby Franciscan church after it was closed during the French Revolution. The large window of the Assumption of Mary in the portal facade was created by Guy Chabrol in 1956.
