St. Nicholas in Reinhausen

The side church of St. Nikolaus is located at Oberen Regenstrasse 27 in the Reinhausen district of Regensburg .

history

The church was built by the first residents of Reinhausen (boatmen, raftsmen and fishermen) and is first mentioned in a document in 1228. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra . When the church over time became too small for the growing community, Pastor Michael Wieshuber von Sallern finally gave the impetus to build the new church of St. Josef in Reinhausen, which was built in 1906-08. Today St. Nikolaus is a side church of the parish of St. Josef. After the lowering of the church to a minor church, weekly weekday masses as well as some smaller masses, such as B. at petitions , wedding anniversaries, etc. held.

building

The former Sondersiechenkirche is a choir tower church with a single nave and semicircular apse , tower with onion dome and pilasters from the 12th century. In 1754 the church was extended to the west and given a baroque style . The high altar of the church was made around 1670; it mainly consists of the image of St. Nicholas, painted around 1630, and a small structure with a wooden Madonna from the beginning of the 16th century.

There are still two side altars in the church: both consist of a figure niche and a small structure. In the north side altar (on the left of the entrance) there is a Madonna, in the structure of St. Nepomuk ; on the right is a man of Sorrows in the manner of Christ resting, above St. Sebastian . All three altars have a tabernacle. The people's altar was added later and adapted to the rest of the furnishings .

There is also a figure of St. Nicholas from the 14th century in the church. The organ , a valuable baroque organ from the early baroque period, was restored in 1988 and moved under the north window of the parish church of St. Josef , where it is now played at church services with a small choir.

The former stone cemetery wall is probably medieval; However, it is also possible that the wall was erected at the time of the church expansion to the west, perhaps for flood protection reasons (the church is on a small pedestal) or simply as a boundary wall. Twelve grave tablets or epitaphs from the period between the 17th and 19th centuries are still reminiscent of the earlier cemetery; they are now attached to the church walls inside the church.

use

The church has been used by the Serbian Orthodox community of Regensburg since 2016.
