Katherine Young (born July 28, 1980 in Ypsilanti , Michigan ) is an American improvisation musician ( bassoon , electronics) and composer whose music is characterized by “ peculiar sound colors, expressive noises and kinetic structures ”.

Live and act

Young attended public schools in Georgia, Texas, and Mississippi; She then studied bassoon and comparative literature at Oberlin College (graduated in 2003) and then lived in Chicago, where she worked in the improvisation scene, a. a. with the experimental band From Beyond (with Jason Adasiewicz ), the chamber ensemble Till by Turning , the duo Architeuthis Walks on Land with the violinist Amy Cimini and Civil War (with Cimini and Adam Sonderberg). She then studied composition at Wesleyan University (Master's degree in 2008) with Anthony Braxton , Ron Kuivila and Alvin Lucier . After graduation she moved to New York City and continued her work in the following years with the projects Till by Turning and Architeuthis Walks on Land ; She also played in various Anthony Braxton formations, such as the Diamond Curtain Wall Quartet and the Tri-Centric Orchestra . She also appeared as a soloist; In 2009 she released the solo album Further Secret Origins (Porter Records), which received positive acclaim in the specialist press such as The Wire (" Bassoon colossus ") and Downbeat (" seriously bold leaps for the bassoon ").

Furthermore, Young occupied herself from then on with the composition of acoustic and electroacoustic music and continued her composition studies in New York. Upon her return to Chicago, she worked with her quartet Pretty Monsters , which includes guitarist Jeff Parker , drummer Tim Daisy and violinist Erica Dicker . The formation's debut album, for which they rewrote solo numbers from Further Secret Origins for Ensemble, was created in New York for Public Eyesore Records with the New York line-up of their band with Erica Dicker, Mike Pride and Owen Stewart-Robertson . In addition, during her career she worked a. a. with FM Einheit , Dan Peck , Jason Ajemian , Jacob Wick , Peter Evans , Guillermo Gregorio , Mary Halvorson , Fred Lonberg-Holm and Jessica Pavone . In the field of jazz and improvisation music, she was involved in eight recording sessions between 2005 and 2011.

Young wrote u. a. Commissioned compositions for dance and chamber ensembles such as Northwestern's Contemporary Music Ensemble, Ensemble Recherche, Talea Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, String Orchestra of Brooklyn, Spektral Quartet, Fonema Consort and TimeTable Percussion ; Her composition Inside UFO 53-32 for the Flux Quartet was described by Anthony Tommasini in The New York Times as a "rough, plaintive, coloristic piece" with an "organic entrainment". She is currently doing a PhD at the Composition Department of Northwestern University and is working as Artist in Residence at EMPAC at the Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute. She also works with Lee Hyla , Hans Thomalla and Jay Alan Yim . In Germany she performed in 2014 a. a. in the event series Luftbrücke in the Cologne Kunsthaus Rhenania with Brad Henkel .
