James Falzone

James Falzone (born September 1, 1971 ) is an American clarinetist , band leader and composer in the field of jazz and contemporary music.

Life

Falzone had his first lessons from his uncle, the tenor saxophonist and film composer James DiPasquale . This put him in touch with the Chicago saxophonist Rich Corpolongo , who introduced him to jazz improvisation. He then studied clarinet at Northern Illinois University with Melvin Warner. He obtained his master's degree at the New England Conservatory in Boston , where he studied in the Third Stream / Contemporary Improvisation program a . a. studied with Ran Blake and Hankus Netsky. After returning to Chicago, he founded the chamber jazz ensemble Allos Musica . He also taught at various universities and colleges. He currently works at North Central College in Naperville , Illinois , teaching music theory , composition, and world music . He is active in the Chicago jazz and improvisation scene; he played u. a. in the improvisation sextet Flatlands Collective with Jorrit Dijkstra , Fred Lonberg-Holm and Jeb Bishop as well as in Keefe Jackson's Project Project . In 2001 he presented the chamber music album The Already & The Not Yet ; more albums followed with his band projects Allos Musica ( The Sign and the Thing Signified , 2006 and Lamentations , 2010) and Klang ( Tea Music , 2009 and Other Doors , 2011). Falzone is also the musical director of the Grace Chicago Church; he wrote commissioned compositions for chamber music ensembles and symphony orchestras . He also played in Tim Daisy's chamber jazz trio Vox Arcana and in the French ensemble Le Bon Vent .

Falzone was named a rising star clarinetist in 2011 by the Down Beat critics poll . The Jazz Journalist Association named him Clarinetist of the Year that same year.
