St. Norbert is a Roman Catholic church on Dominicusstrasse in the Schöneberg district of Berlin .

history

The church was built under Carl Kühn from 1913 to 1918 and in 1915 it was spun off from the parish of St. Matthias as a new parish . It is consecrated to St. Norbert von Xanten . As was customary for the time, a historicizing hybrid style was chosen . A neo-Romanesque design language was chosen . The double tower facade was integrated into the wall of today's Dominicusstrasse. The domed church interior still preserved quoted the Byzantine rotunda. The church was damaged during World War II . In the course of the traffic-friendly redesign of Dominicusstraße as an east-west axis, the entire northern wall of the street was demolished, including the well-preserved double tower facade of the church. The Berlin Senate compensated the Catholic Church financially, so that the church could be fundamentally redesigned between 1958 and 1962 by the architects Hermann Fehling and Daniel Gogel . New and old parts of the church are listed .

The architects rebuilt the church at the same time as the neighboring new building of the Evangelical Paul Gerhardt Church , which was completely destroyed in the war , so that an overall ensemble was created with a decided contrast to the nearby Schöneberg village church . Up until the Second World War, the St. Norbert Hospital was located right next to the church; the St. Josef retirement home has been located here since the 1950s.

The neighboring former parish of St. Konrad was abolished in 2004 and incorporated into the parish of St. Norbert. On November 30, 2016, Archbishop Heiner Koch set up the pastoral room Schöneberg-Tiergarten Süd , which includes the two parishes St. Matthias and St. Norbert with their five churches and all places of ecclesiastical life. After a period of three years on probation, a new parish is to be established on the territory of the two parishes.
