The Catholic Church of St. Norbertus in Arnsberg

The Catholic Church of St. Norbertus is the church of the parish vicarie St. Norbertus in Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), the building is characteristic of the town. The parish belongs to the Arnsberg-Neustadt Pastoral Association in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

The first planning for the church began in 1945 after the end of the Second World War , after Theodor Legge became provost of Arnsberg. To ensure that the Catholics in the new Gierskämpen district were looked after , a new church building was needed. The planning dragged on largely unsuccessfully until 1962, then the Propsteigemeinde bought a piece of land in the old field in order to build a community center here. In order to create the possibility of celebrating church services as soon as possible, the community rented a former Wehrmacht barracks in the village, where the first mass was celebrated in 1964.

Since the city of Arnsberg changed the plans for the local development, the Alte Feld was not designated as a residential area, the parish also had to adapt its plans in order not to build a community center on the outskirts. The existing plot of land was bought by the district's Caritas Association and the parish bought a plot of land in Dickenbruch, the purchase contract for this was signed in mid-1967. The new area was in the Liebfrauengemeinde and both communities had to vote on the future. At a meeting of the parishes involved, the members decided to build the new parish center and create a new pastoral care district, which was given the name St. Norbertus. Werner Hille from Neheim was commissioned to produce the plans for the new center, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 22, 1974, the laying of the foundation stone on June 29, 1975 and the topping-out ceremony on October 17, 1975. Auxiliary Bishop Paul Nordhues consecrated the church on June 6, 1976. The congregation was raised to an independent parish vicarie in November 1977 and was given the right to manage its own assets. Because of a number of defects, extensive renovation work had to be carried out in 2003, the heating was defective and a new coat of paint was carried out.

Steeple

First considerations for the construction of a tower were made in 1992, a donation provided a financial basis. These plans dragged on until 1994, when the architect Werner Hille received the order for the planning. The tower should be 20 meters high and the bell house should be able to hold four bells. After the necessary approval from the Archbishop's General Vicariate in Paderborn, construction began. The Gescher bell foundry manufactured three bells in 1995. The fourth bell comes from a municipality in Silesia, it was cast in 1564. The bells were consecrated in the names of Norbertus, Marien, Laurentius and Hedwig, the patron saint of Silesia.

Furnishing

  • The organ was built in June 1977 by the Stockmann organ builder from Werl, the acquisition of the instrument was made possible through a donation.
  • A reliquary stands under the altar table , it was donated in 1978.
  • The chancel was fundamentally redesigned in 1985, a new tabernacle and an ambo were installed.
  • In June 1989 the old, different pews were replaced by new, uniform ones.
  • The baptismal font was created by the sculptor Christian Gördes from Hellefeld to match the rest of the furnishings in the chancel.
