St. Pankratius ('s-Heerenberg)
St. Pankratius ( Dutch Sint Pancratiuskerk ) is a Roman Catholic church in 's-Heerenberg , municipality of Montferland , in the Dutch province of Gelderland . The neo-Gothic basilica was built from 1895 to 1897 and bears the name of St. Pancras .
history
The medieval church of 's-Heerenberg St. Pankratius and Georg already had the same main patronage . It has served the Reformed local congregation since the Reformation . A small Catholic church was built during the Batavian Republic in 1803. The representative new building that it replaced towards the end of the century was designed by Alfred Tepe . A large part of the construction costs were donated by Leopold von Hohenzollern from the Catholic Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen branch , who as Count von dem Bergh was lord of Huis Bergh .
Jan Ysbrands Galama was pastor at St. Pankratius from 1931 until his murder in the Dachau concentration camp in 1942 .
Building
The north-west facing, cross-shaped church consists of a three-aisled nave , to which the transept and the choir with side chapels adjoin. Choir, transept arms and chapels close on three sides. The square bell tower with a pointed helmet on the upper floor contains three historic bells by Geert van Wou (1496), which come from the old church and were bought by the Catholic community in 1897.
Furnishing
Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg created the high altar and other items of equipment from the construction period . Large parts of the original picture windows have been preserved.
The organ was built in 1903–1907 by the organ builder Michaël Maarschalkerweerd (Utrecht).
