The Catholic Church of St. Peter , also known as St. Petrus , in the Marsberg district of Padberg was built in the 11th or the beginning of the 12th century.

history

Conrad III. In 1030 the “praedium Padberg” was donated by a royal court to Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn. A church was first mentioned in 1057. There are no documents about its construction. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of a previous building. The wall of the choir of this older church is part of the later east wall. Possibly it is the chapel of the royal court from 1030. The current church was built before 1120 at the latest. A first extension followed around 1180 and in 1220 another yoke was added in the northwest. A last expansion took place in the 14th century.

St. Peter lost its function as a parish church in 1913 with the construction of the new parish church of St. Maria Magdalena . After that, for a long time it was only used on special occasions, such as the Corpus Christi or Antonius procession.

Nevertheless, the church was preserved and extensively restored between 1997 and 2004, including some archaeological research. Since the restoration, monthly services have been held there again in the summer months.

In 2004, the church was Monument of the Month of the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe .

architecture

The oldest part of the small church is Romanesque . The building was later expanded. The windows of the extension have Gothic tracery windows. The door, studded with iron nails, with the possibility of locking it from the inside, still testifies to the function as a fortified church . The portal is rounded. The interior is almost square. The church has two aisles and two bays with a strong load-bearing central pillar. The four ceiling fields are covered with groin vaults . The church has a gable roof covered with slate with a ridge turret . The tower clock dates from the 18th century. With a wooden window from the 13th century, the church has the oldest of its kind in Westphalia. The restored interior painting dates from the same time.

Furnishing

In 1670 the church received a baroque high altar from the Papen workshop . In 1735, a Marian altar was added from the same workshop. A baptismal font dates from 1670. All three items of equipment are now in the new parish church. There are still two praying angels from the old furnishings in the church.

The church was the burial place of the von Padberg family . In the church there are two tombstones from 1557 and 1585. The family had its own gallery.
