Church in Gerhardtsgereuth

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Peter and Paul in Gerhardtsgereuth , a district of the city of Hildburghausen in southern Thuringia , goes back to a chapel that already existed in the 15th century. The listed building was given its current appearance in 1740.

history

For the year 1499 there is a chapel in Gerhardtsgereuth under the patronage of the apostles Peter and Paul. In 1544 the chapel became a branch church of the Wiedersbach parish .

Among other things, the round-arched triumphal arch indicates a building that is essentially Romanesque . In 1601 the chapel was enlarged and given a roof turret. The next renovation with another extension followed in 1740. A hundred years later, an extensive renovation was carried out and, among other things, a pulpit altar was installed on the triumphal arch. There were further construction measures in 1914/15 and 1955, when the triumphal arch for a winter church was bricked up and the pulpit was moved to the south side in front of the triumphal arch. Between 2002 and 2005, wood had to be replaced due to dry rot and the masonry had to be dehumidified. In addition, the floor and the benches were replaced, the tower was re-slated and the tower decorations with button and weathercock were newly gilded. The parish had renovation work on the facade carried out in 2007. The parish has belonged to the district of St. Kilian since 2002 .

layout

The church, surrounded by a cemetery, has a gable roof with red tiles. The half-timbered gables on both sides and the roof turret on the west side with a Welschen hood , in which a bronze bell from 1855 and two chilled iron bells , which were cast in 1954 as a replacement for bells melted down during the World War, hang. The big, younger bell has the inscription: “ONLY LOVE WORKS PEACE; THAT I CALL INTO THE COUNTRY; FOREIGN CHRIST; TRUE ALWAYS TO SHAME ”.

The facade consists of sandstone foundation walls, the corners of the building are bordered with red sandstone blocks. On the southeastern outer corner stone there is a carved Latin cross at a height of one meter , the meaning of which is not known. The portal on the south side is baroque and shows the year 1740.

The tower clock was made in 1920 by Bernhard Saam from Themar .

Furnishing

The free-standing sandstone altar is located between the pulpit , which has a goblet-like base, and a small rococo baptismal font that bears the date 1742. The nave is spanned by a baroque ceiling from which a Flemish chandelier hangs and has two galleries . Frescoes from 1601 or 1740 have not yet been exposed for financial reasons.

The organ on the west gallery is probably a work by Michael Schmidt from Schmiedefeld , created around 1840. In 1922 the Schleusingen organ building company Kühn renewed the instrument.
